Feeling lost, a husband called Fedelta to discuss housing options for his 63 year old wife. Several years ago, his wife had been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. Since then, he has struggled to take care of her in their home. He shared with us that he and his wife have been married for 40 years and were fortunate to travel all over the world.
We could hear the pride in his voice as he explained to us that his wife had attended school part-time while raising their family, and achieved her goal of teaching at a local college. Now, his wife struggles to even communicate, she ahs limited speech skills and suffers from memory loss. He had told us that she has wandered away from home twice and experiences bouts of hallucinations and paranoia, as well as sadness and depression.
He has been helping to bathe her and while he is in relatively good health, his wife requires more care than he can adequately provide.Knowing how emotionally draining and physically demanding it can be to care for a loved one with dementia we came to the conclusion that finding an adult family home would be best for the both of them. Our nurse, Patricia, and Housing Specialist, Tracey, met with his wife to identify the kind of care needed and to discuss adult family homes that specialize in memory disorders.
After touring a few centers, the husband chose Arbor Rose, an Adult Family Home in Tacoma, designed for seniors with dementia. Not only does Arbor Rose has a great reputation but the wife enjoys how bright and airy the home is and loves spending her free time in the courtyard garden.
