Keeping You (the Caregiver) and Your Client Healthy This Flu Season

It’s that time of year when everyone around seems to be getting sick, from the common cold to influenza – the “flu”.  The flu is a respiratory illness that can range from mild to severe, even fatal. Young children, older adults, or those with compromised immune systems are particularly high risk for complications.

The best way to prevent getting the flu is to have an annual flu shot.  Even if you get the flu, symptoms are generally less severe than if you didn’t get the immunization.

Besides getting your flu shot, you can stop the spread of the flu virus and other potential harmful pathogens by following universal precautions.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water—especially after you sneeze or cough, and before eating.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand gel to clean your hands if you don’t have access to soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the garbage.
  • If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the upper part of your sleeve.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear sick.
  • Wear a mask if you have a cough or if around others that are sick or coughing.
  • Stay home if you have flu like symptoms (fever greater than 100.4, body aches, sore throat, coughing, and stuffy/runny nose).

If you suspect your client is sick, please call Fedelta (206.362.2366) for guidance.  It’s important to get plenty of rest and drink fluids to avoid complications such as dehydration.
